Just the Way These Things Go

You are the only child of the world's most powerful superhero and are secretly in a relationship with the bastard child of the world's strongest villain.

Ed slipped into the flat through the fire escape window and sprawled out on the couch and pulled his cell phone from his pocket. He was scrolling aimlessly through some news reels on his phone catching up on current events. It was all mindless though, the only thing he was really worried about seeing was the person he was waiting for today. Today was their day. One day a week Ed got alone time with Cami. Cami was absolutely gorgeous in an unconventional way.

Ed’s favorite thing about Cami was her crooked grin. She had a way of making it look so sexy it made him want to do all the things to her. He was in a lot of trouble when she paired it with her smoldering eyes that she saved for just him. They had been meeting up for several weeks in this same spot that she had picked out for them. He knew that he was catching feelings too fast for her, but he wasn’t worried about it.

He held his breath and tried not to stiffen at the sound of another person slipping into the space from the door across the room. Normally Cami took the fire escape like him but when he saw her radiant smile he immediately warmed up and waited for her to tackle him. She did not disappoint in the least. Cami took a running start and jumped onto the couch and caught her own weight on the sides of him and pushed her torso into his and kissed him on the neck. Her breath warmed him before her lips did and she whispered “Hello, love.” She leaned back and winked at him with her crooked grin before leaning back down for a quick kiss.

He smiled at her and pulled at her shirt to try to bring her back down to him. “Hello, trouble.” Her smile widened into a full tooth smile before closing to kiss him again. She loved that he called her trouble. He started calling her that after a few dates and it stuck, and it oddly fit her very well.

She backed up again and this time separated herself fully and moved his legs down so she could sit beside him. He raised an eyebrow at her but moved and sat beside her and wrapped an arm around her. “Listen, I can’t meet up with you next week, alright?”

He chuckled softly as he said “That’s fine, want to do another night?”

She pulled his arm off her shoulders. She turned towards him and crossed her legs in front of her as she said “No, that won’t be possible. I have family coming to town and I just can’t be going out. Cool?”

His smile faded. “I guess. Like a grandma or something?”

Her face fell slightly. “Or something. It’s not that important, well, err. I’m doing this wrong.” She stopped and tugged at her own shirt and began to bunch it around her fist. Ed reached out and grabbed her hand and held it tight inside his own. She took a breath and relaxed again. “Look. I know who you are and that’s why we meet here instead of going on dates.” This really took him by surprise and he couldn’t hide the hurt that crossed his face. “Oh my, yeah, still doing this wrong. I’m sorry. Shit.” She tried to pull her hand free to fidget again.

Ed lifted his head and looked at her very seriously. “Who am I that you feel the need to date me this way? I have enjoyed the hell out of these nights with you. I don’t care if it’s dinner and a movie or an old abandoned apartment complex. I just like being with you.”

Her mouth screwed up and she resisted biting her lower lip as she sorted through her thoughts. “I don’t normally date. I mean, I’m no hermit, but I’m not usually the kind to get wrapped up into things like this. Especially with the son of a hero. THE hero.”

He recoiled slightly, closing his eyes and taking a breath. “My mom is not me.”

She spat out, “Trust me, I know that!” She calmed down with another breath. “But she doesn’t exactly make dating you easy though. I don’t want to be the girl you take home to meet mom and mom looks down her nose at me, not good enough for the son of a hero.”

He resisted a growl. “My mom has no input on my dating life, not that she gave a shit if I dated. I stopped looking for her approval a long time ago. I’m no hero, just one’s son.”

She sighed. “Yeah, but you don’t exactly live off the radar either.”

His gaze narrowed. “No, not exactly. But unless you’re a criminal or a member of a criminal family, it doesn’t much matter.” He saw something cross her face. “And even if you were”

She cut him off. “I am.” He recoiled again. “Well, I’m not a criminal. I sneak around in the shadows of places because I was raised that way. Family and all that. I’m not exactly someone that fits into my family, daughter of a villain and all that.”

Ed looked at her for a long moment without speaking. He closed his eyes as he asked “Which one?” He didn’t want to see her face as she said the words. But when the name was whispered, his breath caught again and his eyes went wide without permission. “I’m sorry, what?”

Cami swallowed hard. “Yeah. So, um. Yeah. I’m sorry.”

Ed whispered, “How long have you known who I am?”

Cami whispered back, eyes closed in pain, “Since our first night here.”

Ed winced. “You know our mother’s are”

She cut him off again, “Yeah, I know.” She scooted away from him slightly. “I was hoping I had more time before she came back to town and screwed this up.”

He scooted closer to her and reached for her hand again. “My mom has been preparing for weeks for a fight with your mom. They're the two strongest supers out there.”

Cami snorted and then had to work to suppress a laugh. Ed raised an eyebrow and waited for her to calm down. He was about to ask her what was so funny but she offered up her thoughts willingly. “Imagine asking them to sit down together to meet our partners.”

Ed couldn’t help himself, he cracked up laughing. Cami fell into fits of laughter with him and he pulled her into a tight hug with them laughing for several minutes before he leaned down and kissed her. He kissed her so hard he was worried she would run. Instead she returned his kiss with equal force. When he finally pulled away from her he whispered, “It would probably be the best family meal I’ve had in a long, long time. It’s just crazy enough that I might be willing to arrange it.” He winked at her just before leaning down to resume kissing her.
